Spring Newsletter 2008

Oh my goodness, spring has sprung, and so quickly. One day we were commenting about the trees just beginning to leaf out and looking so pale and pretty and in less than a week every thing is green, really beautifully green. The pink of the redbud and the white of the dogwood have vanished amid the sea of green. And, it is not only the trees, a huge amount of the forest floor is carpeted with lush green ferns, it is truly spectacular. Time to stop and smell the roses, so to speak, as the forest has renewed in all it’s glory. I know, I know, it happens every year, but it is so magical! Time to get the horses out on the trail and experience nature’s wonder.

Let’s see what I have to tell everyone. The visitors from Michigan were back for a month or more, which was great fun for me. Being able to build on relationships with other horse folks is very rewarding. They left Michigan in 6 degrees……..brrrrrrr………..and during their time here, decided to leave the horses with me and head down to the valley for a few days. You know what the temperature was down there……….106, oops……….Also, the couple from Joplin made a return visit, so lucky for me. Have recently had a visit from a couple from Minnesota, looking for a place to bring their horses for 2 months next year. They have looked at a few places so just hope I will be the lucky one.

Have managed to ride all winter long, in spite of the rain and extended hunting season and we have had some great rides. As the years roll by I am realizing that with just a little common sense and playing by the rules, hunting season is not to be worried about too much. Always wear orange and go into the forest between 11-3, that way we get a good ride and do not interfere with the folks who enjoy hunting.

So, what is on the agenda. For one, my brother will soon be back from his travels which means the farm will get a wonderful spruce up, and things I can not do or do not have time to do, will get done. Yippee!!

The Hog Scramble endurance ride is coming up, May 10th-11th, mark your calendar every one, because they do have an introductory 15 mile ride, and, for those of you who missed the official notification, the BIG ditches have been taken out this year. There may be one, being that the trail goes from A to B, so to speak, and the ditch is in the middle.

I have started a new, very rewarding, and very small creative endeavor. Making jeweled, tasseled and very colorful halters for your horses. ‘Pretty Crafty’ is the name and a booth will be set up at the Hog Scramble ride. Also look for wonderful rugs and mats, handmade by Heidi.

For those of you who are not attending the ‘Hog Scramble’ ride, the farm will be closed for that weekend. However, the trails will all be wonderfully marked after so many horses have been through them so look forward to some great riding for the rest of the summer. And, every one is welcome to come and watch the goings on and do some shopping, there will be a handful of equine related booths, just leave the horses at home.

Happy Trails to one and all,

Fiona
